Zbigniew Romańczuk was born on the 9th of April in 1960. He graduated from the Institute of Art UMCS in Lublin. From 1993 to 1994 he was on a scholarship in Copenhagen which he had been granted by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark. Zbigniew Romańczuk held the position of Pro-rector For Art and Education from 2010 to 2012 whereas from 2012 to 2016 he was Pro-rector For Education and International Relations of the Academy of Art in Szczecin. Since 2017 he has been the head of the Faculty of Painting at the Department of Painting and New Media of the Academy of Art in Szczecin. In 2018 Zbigniew Romańczuk was awarded the title of Professor in the field of fine arts. From 2010 to 2017 he worked on an artistic project which employed the technologies from the field of science. The project called Grid System examined the status of an image in the era when the techniques of reproducing, processing and creating are rapidly developing and where the hybridization of an image comes to be a common phenomenon. The produced works are based on a digital recording that determines the pixel structure of an image, the configuration of geometric elements characterised by rich visual effects and dense modular structures subject to the discipline of rhythm. Further exhibitions of that series showed how technology and culture had influenced the artist’s idea of art, they referred to possible scenarios of visual art development, the autonomy of an image as well as how an image independently communicates a message.

Works of that series were displayed at the following exhibitions:

– Nature of Image, The Gallery of Punkty Widzenia , Gorzów Wielkopolski, 2010
– Edited Images, The National Museum, Szczecin, 2013

So inspiring were the works from the series Grid System that the monograph entitled New fields of imaging – digital painting came into being. The authors of the monograph became engaged in theoretical considerations basing their reflections on Zbigniew Romańczuk’s Grid System. It was published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe of the Academy of Art in Szczecin in 2016, edited by Ryszard Ziarkiewicz with the collaboration of PhD (dr.) Joanna Szczepanik while an editorial review was written by Professor Piotr Zawojski.
